Overfishing is devastating marine ecosystems, erasing species at an alarming rate and threatening ocean-dependent livelihoods. Yet, in Peniche, Portugal – a historic epicentre of maritime tradition – the population remains deeply tied to the sea. Here, the harbour is a stage for both daily labor and fleeting moments of leisure. For migrant fishermen, once drawn to these shores by a promise of abundance, the harbour has also become a sanctuary. Bound by low wages and rising city rents, they live together in communal warehouses along the water, anchoring their lives to the very edge of the sea.
